The 304 stainless steel pipes are one of the most used products in the piping applications. The SS 304 pipes differ in material grades, dimensions and in the finishing and mechanical properties. 304 is the most used stainless steel product. There are cold worked and annealed types of pipes in the 304 grade of steel.
There are different procedures involving the making of these different types of AISI 304 pipes. The cold worked pipes are drawn from raw material. They are not forged or formed through welding. They are drawn to shape during production. This process involves heating and allowing the material to cool while drawing it to the desired shape. There are ¼ hard, ½ hard, ¾ hard and full hard types.
The cold worked SS 304 pipe could be reheated to gain temper and to increase ductility. The annealing process can be solution annealing or bright annealing. These processes involve heating of the material to certain temperature and then allowing the material to cool rapidly but not faster than the rate at which it would cool under air. The solution heat treatment on 304 grade steel can take place in the range of 1010 - 1120 degrees Celsius of heat.
